Morning: the village and the bay

Start on Ocean Beach Road with breakfast or a coffee. Pick one or two shops to explore, then head towards the foreshore for views over Port Phillip. Keep the first part of your day open: if you arrive by ferry, begin at the bay and work your way up into town instead.

The mix of limestone buildings, shops and places to eat makes the village a useful starting point. Visit Mornington Peninsula introduces the town; our café listings help you choose a breakfast stop. Check the venue’s own menu and opening details before setting out.

Allow time to sit by the water rather than trying to cover the whole foreshore. With children, agree on one main activity and keep lunch flexible. If you would like help choosing a walking route, the visitor information centre at 38 Ocean Beach Road can help when open.

Afternoon: lunch, then an ocean lookout

Choose a restaurant lunch or collect takeaway before your next stop. For a day with fewer moving parts, stay around the village and browse local shops. If you want a booked experience instead, make it the centrepiece of your afternoon and use the operator’s departure instructions.

If conditions suit, add Sorrento Back Beach. Parks Victoria places it around 1.5 kilometres south of town and describes a short 0.5-kilometre circuit from the lifesaving club to the lookout rotunda. That circuit is at the beach; allow separately for travel there and back. The site has a car park, picnic area and toilets. See Parks Victoria’s ocean beach guide for facilities and current conditions.

Treat this as a viewpoint stop. Ocean surf and rocks need care; keep to open designated paths and follow local signs. If wind or rain makes the coast unappealing, use our rainy-day ideas and finish with an afternoon drink in town.

Travel and parking: work backwards from home time

  • By ferry: Searoad carries foot passengers and vehicles between Queenscliff and Sorrento. Its FAQ estimates 40–45 minutes for the crossing. Choose your return sailing before planning dinner and check current check-in requirements and fares; crossing time excludes boarding.
  • By public transport: check route 788 between Frankston and Portsea via Sorrento. Allow for your train connection and the walk from your stop. Check the return journey, especially if staying for dinner.
  • By car: the visitor centre notes additional parking on George Street behind the shops. Read the signs at your chosen space and set a reminder for any time limit. Leave a buffer for finding parking and returning to the car.

Comfortable shoes, a layer for the wind and a refillable water bottle make the day easier. Check the local forecast before leaving. Want dinner without a same-day trip home? Start with our guide to where to stay.
