Arrive, settle in and go out for dinner
Choose your base around the trip you want. If walking to dinner matters, check the property’s exact address and route to Ocean Beach Road. If you have a car, compare Portsea and Blairgowrie too. Our accommodation guide helps you weigh up the three areas before checking dates.
On arrival, leave time to unpack and find your bearings. Book a restaurant you would be happy to build the evening around, or keep a takeaway option in reserve for a later arrival. Confirm kitchen hours directly rather than assuming dinner will still be available when you reach town.
Your village day: breakfast, browsing and the bay
Begin with a slow breakfast, browse Ocean Beach Road and spend part of the afternoon beside Port Phillip. This is your day to leave unscheduled. Pick a few things to do, then stop when you find somewhere you would like to linger.
Follow the one-day itinerary for an optional Back Beach lookout. If a water-based tour is your priority, check the operator’s conditions and book that first; move the rest of the day around its departure. Wet weather? Switch to our indoor and rainy-day options.
Your second day: choose one bigger outing
Option 1: Point Nepean, near Portsea
Set aside a substantial part of the day for the Quarantine Station and, if time and access permit, Fort Nepean. The national park is on Bunurong Country and offers insight into its quarantine and defence history. Start with the Parks Victoria visitor guide and current notices.
You cannot drive all the way to the fort. Parks Victoria lists walking, cycling and the park shuttle as options, with a walk of approximately 4.5 kilometres one way from the Quarantine Station car park. See Fort Nepean access information before choosing your route; allow for the return journey and time at the site.
Check park access before travelling. At our review, Parks Victoria listed partial closures affecting facilities and access. Confirm current shuttle arrangements, bring drinking water, and use the village day as a fallback if your intended route is unavailable.
Option 2: cross the bay to Queenscliff
Make the ferry journey the centrepiece, with time for lunch and a wander on the other side. Searoad’s FAQ gives a crossing time of about 40–45 minutes. Compare foot-passenger and vehicle travel for your plans, then check the return timetable, fares and check-in requirements. Leave a buffer between your return and any onward journey; do not squeeze this and Point Nepean into the same afternoon.
Make the bookings fit together
- Compare the total stay cost, cancellation terms, parking and any minimum-night requirement before paying.
- Match activities to your accommodation’s check-in and check-out times. Ask about luggage storage if you need it.
- Confirm dietary and access requirements with venues before booking, and leave one part of each day unplanned.
Travelling without a car? Check route 788 and your connections before choosing accommodation or an excursion. A well-placed base can make a short break feel much longer.
